Hillsborough Education Associate Pride Committee Announces Winners of the Postcards For Kids Contest

BORO PRIDE Student Art Contest
Celebrating Community Strength Continues to Grow

A few weeks ago, the Hillsborough Education Association (HEA) Pride Committee excitedly announced a new community project called Postcards for Kids. This project is funded through a grant from the New Jersey Education Association and unites members of our community under the BORO PRIDE banner. The project was created with the goal of bringing our community together and sending some extra support to our students as they navigate these difficult times.

Close to 200 hundred talented student artists from Auten Road Intermediate School, Hillsborough Middle School and Hillsborough High School submitted artwork for the contest focusing on the theme of, "We are All in This Together" The artwork was reviewed by a panel of stakeholders including BOE members, administrators, community leaders like Assemblyman Roy Frieman and Mayor Shawn Lipani, Shannon and Dave Winters from Sunnyside Gifts, Superintendent Lisa Antunes, BOE President Jean Trujillo and the HEA Pride Committee. Three winners were selected, one from each school, and their artwork was transformed in 1,500 postcards that will be made available to elementary staff to send an uplifting message to a student or celebrate their successes during such a challenging time.

The winners, Akshaya Suresh-Kumar, Jeremy Csobor-Bray, and Jessica Hermann, were announced by Christina Smith, HEA 2nd Vice President and PRIDE Chair, at a recent Board of Education meeting. They received a $25 dollar Amazon gift card and the sincere appreciation and admiration of all who reviewed their work.

The theme of community collaboration and collective strength continued to grow beyond the contest. The Hillsborough/Millstone Municipal Alliance, in conjunction with the HEA, BoroSAFE , Hillsborough Stigma Free, the Hillsborough Township Committee and the Hillsborough BOE further built upon the message of "We are All in This Together" and have announced a live streamed fundraiser talent show called, "We're All in This Together: Hillsborough's Hidden Talents" that will showcase residents' talents in everything from singing, bands, juggling, comedy, plate spinning, poetry to silly human tricks. The event will stream on Friday April 23rd and Saturday April 24th and cost $5 per screen. All proceeds will benefit the important work of the Hillsborough/Millstone Municipal Alliance and BoroSAFE, which support mental health and wellness initiatives in town.

Student artwork from the contest will be showcased throughout the upcoming talent show, so submissions can be enjoyed by the community. The HEA is also pleased to announce that following the incredible submissions, they have further endeavored to share the students' talent and uplifting message. A billboard has been rented on Route 206 in Hillsborough to showcase Jessica Hermann's winning design and celebrate our community's strength and resiliency as we navigate challenging times and strive for the "Best for BORO".
